Mallett Awarded Prestigious Summer Fellowship at UNC

Ridgeland native Rickyta Mallett, a sociology major, has been awarded the prestigious Organizational Science Summer Institute (OSSI) fellowship at the University of North Carolina.

According to Lisa Walker of the Organizational Science Summer Institute, "this is a highly competitive and selective program with applications from across the country and internationally."

Fellows work with outside scholars and practitioners from the various disciplines and receive training on several aspects of graduate school life. Each fellow is expected to complete a research project and make an effective presentation at the end of the Institute.

"I am very enthused about this incredible opportunity," said Mallett. "There are few internship experiences of this caliber for undergraduates. To be invited to OSSI is a rare privilege. I plan to represent Mississippi Valley State University with excellence, congruent with the priceless training I have received in Sociology."

"This is the third year that a sociology student has been selected for this prestigious award," said Dr. Chandrouti Persaud, advisor. "The letters of recommendation do have significant weight on these selections. I must be confident that a student will rise to the task before I make that call."

She further noted that she emphasizes to students that their performance here at MVSU matters when it's time to write those letters of reference.
"This is truly wonderful and an honor for Ms. Mallett, this is exactly the kind of news that we need the public to know about what we do at MVSU," said Dr. Constance Bland, vice president of academic affairs.
