Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for standing at the "front of the fight to promote ecologically viable, economic and cultural development in Kenya and in Africa." In 1977, she founded the Green Belt Movement, the largest tree-planting project in Africa. Green Belt promotes biodiversity and at the same time creates jobs and gives women a stronger identity in society. Maathai was also voted Time Magazine's "Hero of the Planet" in 1998.  She joined the ancestors in 2004.

Title: Crucial Conversations: Creating Change through Conversation

Instructor: Jamaal Fisher, Alabama State University

Crucial conversations may be described as day-to-day conversations that affect the quality of your life. These conversations are considered crucial when opinions vary, stakes are high and emotions run strong. The consequences of avoiding a crucial conversation can be severe, affecting every aspect of life. This webinar will discuss ways to step up to crucial conversations, with a set of high-leverage skills, and handle them well.

Jamaal Fisher, Reference Librarian, and manager of the Ollie L. Brown Afro-American Heritage Collection at Alabama State University, is presenting this live streaming webinar. Jamaal's library experience encompasses public, special, and academic libraries. He is a graduate of the HBCU Library Alliance Leadership Institute and has received several state and national honors, including being selected as an IMLS Diversity Scholar and an ALA Reach 21 Scholar. Jamaal is a proud graduate of North Carolina Central University's School of Library & Information Science.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will learn how to avoid the traps to ineffective communication that prevent building meaningful conversations that lead to organizational change

  • Participants will learn how to quickly identify the elements of a crucial conversation, and how to avoid "conversation killers"

  • Participants will be empowered to use the 7 principles of Crucial Conversations to build a dialog within their institutions for dynamic and effective change.

  • Participants will be provided tools to create dialog to achieve positive outcomes during difficult conversation
