Clark Atlanta University News April 27, 2017 CAU Awarded $20k Grant to Host Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders Clark Atlanta University has been awarded a $20,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, which drives global corporate citizenship and philanthropic programs for UPS. This generous gift will be used to support CAU as we host the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship, which is the signature program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). YALI Fellows include 25 of the best and brightest emerging business, entrepreneurship and civic leaders. They hail from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa and have established track records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their organizations and communities, according to a release. They will be embedded at CAU for an intense six-week academic and leadership institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. "The Mandela Washington Fellowship (YALI) program is vital because it trains and exposes young African leaders in specific areas in which the United States economy is a global leader," said Dr. Mesfin Bezuneh, director of YALI and economics professor at CAU. "The UPS grant is important as it helps to support the core activities that guarantee the successful implementation of the program at CAU. For UPS, as an international organization, this helps to expand their outreach throughout Africa via these leaders who may become ministers and Presidents in years to come." Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving: volunteerism, diversity, community safety and the environment. "The UPS Foundation is honored to support Clark Atlanta University as it hosts the Mandela Washington Fellowship's efforts to empower young African leaders," said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation and chief diversity and inclusion officer at UPS. "Our goal is to fund powerful programs that make a lasting difference to the global community."
