Bethune-Cookman University News March 8, 2019 B-CU Department of Psychology Hosts Scholar Dr. Na'im Akbar In celebration and recognition of Black History Month, nationally renowned scholar, speaker, and activist, Dr. Na'im Akbar gave a keynote address at the College of Liberal Arts monthly Professional Seminar in February. Dr. Akbar, a preeminent scholar in the field of Black psychology, is a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and is instrumental in eschewing the pathology-laden treatment of Black women and men and in developing more transformative models of female and male functioning and male-female relationships. He is a former president of the National Association of Black Psychologists. Akbar's primary objective as a psychologist is to heal and restore historically oppressed African people. "As one of the progenitors of the scholarly field of African/Black Psychology, Dr. Na'im Akbar's work is commendable and worthy of acclaim," said Psychology Department Chairman Dr. Daniel Hollar. During his address, Dr. Akbar espoused the need for our own institutions for research scholars and instructors to teach African civilization in a manner that enables students to understand and conceptualize their own disciplines through that knowledge. He also touted the value of institutions like B-CU that affirm Black culture as a matter of course. The event was hosted by Dr. Hollar, who was mentored by Dr. Akbar, and made possible by Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Janice Allen-Kelsey; in collaboration with the Department of Behavioral and Social Science Studies; and Association of Black Psychologists Student Circle, Professor Deborah Vance, faculty advisor. Professor Emeritus Dr. Yvonne Mahy, former chair of the Psychology Department, closed out the department's Black History Month activities. The B-CU chapter of the Association of Black Psychologists was named the Student Chapter of the Year for 2018- 2019 by the national organization at its 50th annual convention. SANDRA M.
