Free HIV/AIDS Testing at HU's "Day of Awareness"
The Hampton University Department of Health Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) and the University Health Center are hosting a “Day of Awareness” and offering free HIV/AIDS testing for HU students Nov. 7.
“The goal of the event is to get students aware of their status,” said HPER Chairperson Chevelle Hall, adding that they hope to test 200 students. Testing is between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the HU Student Center Lounge.
The university is hosting the event in conjunction with the Magic Johnson Foundation. Founded by basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson in 1991, the 501c3 organization holds among its duties, “increasing academic and innovative achievement and raising HIV/AIDS awareness, treatment and prevention,” according to its website.
This event marks the 20-year anniversary of Magic Johnson’s announcement that he is HIV positive. HU has participated in other service projects with the Magic Johnson Foundation, including an HIV/AIDS seminar at Centennial High School in Compton, Calif. in 2010. In October, HPER hosted a pre-seminar as a jumpstart to the campaign, which included a guest who is HIV positive.
In 2009, the age group 20-24 accounted for the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses. Between 2006 and 2009, the rates of annual AIDS diagnoses increased among those aged 15-19 and 20-24, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
