Hampton University News July 2, 2019 Hampton University RIDERS Summer Camp 2019 The 2019 Hampton University Equestrian Summer Camp brought in a new group of students for the summer to learn about horses and gain skills to last a lifetime. The Reading Interest Development & Enhancing Riding Skills (RIDERS) summer day camp program held at Hampton University's 1360 N. Mallory Street stables began on June 17 and ends on July 19, 2019. The camp is for kids aged 7 to 17 who are interested in gaining knowledge of all types of horses, riding equipment and terminology. Each day, the campers participate in games and arts & crafts, allowing them to have a new understanding of horses while getting the chance to meet and make new friends with the same interest. "I thought it was going to be like, lots of learning, but it's actually more about fun and being able to ride the horses is a lot of fun," said 14-year-old Jeremiah Watson, who will attend Phoebus High School in the fall. This day camp uses friendly, trained horses to make reading fun and enjoyable. The cost is $175 per rider and there are regular and advanced sessions available. "I think it's a great program for any student who is interested in horses or even for children who may not know that much about horses," said Felecia Walker, a teacher at the camp. Walker's daughter, Shayna Walker is a RIDERS alumna who is now the main riding instructor. "What is so unique about our RIDER's program is the mother and daughter combination of Mrs. Felicia Walker, Reading Instructor, and Ms. Shayna Walker, riding instructor along with veteran Ms. Gail Bishop, who gives us an all-star team," said Dr. Rodney Gaines, RIDERS Program Director and Hampton University professor. "I continue to be impressed and happy with our RIDER's team. I just get out of the way and let them do what they do best and that is service, and teach the kids!" SANDRA M.
