Washington, D.C. Metro Chapter of NAA Presents Scholarships to New Hornets
Some of the newest members of Hornet Nation recently were recognized during a scholarship gala held by the National Alumni Association's Washington, D.C. Metro Chapter.

The Washington, D.C. Metro Chapter of the National Alumni Association held its annual Black and Gold Scholarship Gala on July 23.

Gala chairperson, alumnus Howard Watkins, said the chapter gave more than $22,000 in scholarships to more than a dozen students. He said ASU also gave more than $197,000 in scholarships to deserving students.

"Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, local sponsors and friends, we were able to have one of our best years yet," said Watkins.

Dr. Tommie "Tonea" Stewart, dean of ASU's College of Visual and Performing Arts, served as the guest speaker for the event. President Gwendolyn E. Boyd also was on hand to help to present the scholarships.

"This event is about opening doors and providing opportunities for students who have chosen to complete their education at Alabama State University," Watkins said.

"These students have worked hard to receive these scholarships. Not only have they excelled at school, they have also participated in pre-college enrichment workshops that introduced them to Alabama State University, social and learning skills, as well as attending church services and taking part in community service projects. They are ready to be fully engaged Hornets."
