Clark Atlanta University's Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development Awarded $7.4 Million for Cancer Research Infrastructure Development
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) April 23 awarded a $7.4 million renewal grant to the Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development (CCRTD) at Clark Atlanta University (CAU).
CAU President Carlton E. Brown said, "We very much appreciate this award and this vote of confidence. It once again affirms the level of excellence demonstrated in the breakthrough research conducted by the CCRTD. The Center's work has resulted in several patents and patents pending. "As important," Brown added, "the Center has graduated 11 Ph.D.s since 2010 and currently has in its laboratories 19 doctoral students who have completed or are working to complete their Ph.D.s. Each of those candidates is required to author and publish their research as a program requirement for graduation. This disciplined standard cements the Center's reputation as one of the nation's most competitive prostate cancer research and educational programs, and will account for a network of approximately 60 minority Ph.D.s by 2025."
The grant will enable CCRTD to continue to enhance, improve and manage research programs in prostate cancer research to increase efficient use of technologies, research capacity and competitiveness, with collaborations and research partnerships, research institutes and community organizations. Specifically, the new award will allow CCRTD to recruit additional scientists to build a competitive basic and translational research center focused on prostate cancer health disparities and to maintain and expand its existing research infrastructure within CCRTD.
Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and CCRTD Director Shafiq A. Khan, Ph.D., is the principal investigator of the five-year grant. He said, "This award is the result of diligent and exhaustive work by the CCRTD faculty and staff. Their collaboration in the development and preparation of this application was invaluable."
About the Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development
The Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development at Clark Atlanta University was created in 1999 with the direct support of the National Institutes of Health's Research Centers at Minority Institutions (RCMI) program. CCRTD faculty comprise the University's departments of biology, chemistry and the School of Education, with research interests in cancer biology, drug discovery and behavioral aspects of cancer. Following a strategic 2004 decision, CCRTD developed a research and educational program in the area of prostate cancer, based upon the disease's significantly higher incidence and mortality among African-American men. The Center's main objectives are: to build a premier research program in prostate cancer, to train the next generation of minority scientists in the area of prostate cancer, and to develop a community-based educational and research program focusing on early detection and treatment of prostate cancer.
The CCRTD is the largest prostate cancer research enterprise in the United States and, to date, the only HBCU member of the Georgia Research Alliance. The CCRTD in March 2014 hosted its 10th annual National Prostate Cancer Symposium, the only forum of its kind in the nation.
