CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR BARBARA HILL NAMED A 2012 VULCAN TEACHER OF EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENT

Dr. Barbara Hill, assistant professor in the School of Education at Clark Atlanta University (CAU), Aug. 30 was named a 2012 Vulcan Teacher of Excellence Award recipient. The award is presented annually by Vulcan Materials Company.

CAU President Carlton E. Brown said, "We are proud of Dr. Hill's work and ongoing contribution not just to Clark Atlanta, but in preparing students to be leaders in the field of education well beyond our walls. Her leadership and dedication to quality in the teaching arena and her role as a mentor are an invaluable investment in the future of young people, particularly future educators."

Hill said, "Teaching has always been a joy and a passion for me. Sharing in the learning process with my students expands my personal skills and knowledge base. To be acknowledged for the work that enriches your life is a great honor, and I am grateful for this award and to share it collectively with the very students who made it happen."

Hill's professional career has spanned four decades in the field of public education in various roles: classroom teacher, staff developer, resource teacher, elementary and middle school principal, human resource director, area superintendent and associate superintendent for instruction. A recipient of numerous awards and honors, she has worked in three metro school districts: Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Schools and Clayton County Schools. Hill also worked for eight years in the nonprofit sector as senior vice president for education for Junior Achievement of Georgia.

On the faculty of the School of Education since 2010, Hill holds a bachelor's degree in social studies/elementary education from Spelman College, a master's degree in education/reading from Atlanta University, and the specialist degree and doctoral degree in educational leadership from Clark Atlanta University.

Vulcan Materials Company has been a sponsor of the Teaching Excellence Awards since 1991 through the Georgia Foundation of Independent Colleges. The award includes a $1,000 cash prize.
