University of Maryland Eastern Shore News August 1, 2014 Cynthia Boyle named interim dean of pharmacy & health professions Dr. Cynthia Boyle has been appointed interim dean of the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Boyle, who joined the UMES faculty in 2011, takes on the administrative duties as the university conducts a national search for a dean. "This is a wonderful opportunity to serve the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions," she said. "With dynamic changes in health care in our nation, we are proud to educate professionals for America's health care teams." In addition to pharmacy, Boyle will oversee academic departments offering allied health degrees in physician assistant studies, physical therapy, exercise science and rehabilitation services. Dr. Patrick Liverpool, UMES' interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, made the announcement of Boyle's appointment. "Dr. Boyle brings a wealth of experience as a front-line educator and as an administrator to an important leadership post here at UMES," Liverpool said. "President Juliette Bell and I are confident she will continue building on the solid foundation we have established educating future generations of health care professionals." Boyle noted she and her faculty colleagues believe "Team-based health care will move from fee-for-service to payment for quality outcomes, which assure improved access, improved health, and decreased cost." "For our students," she said, "we will commit to preparing them for core competencies for inter-professional practice in the areas of values and ethics, roles and responsibilities, communication and teams/teamwork." "I look forward to working with students, faculty, professional staff, alumni, campus colleagues and citizens in our endeavors," Boyle said. Boyle has served as professor and chair of UMES' Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, where she was Executive Director for its experiential learning program. During her career, she also has practiced in community and institutional settings as well as done consulting work. Boyle is president-elect of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), a professional organization she has served in many capacities, including as Speaker of its House of Delegates. She has received a variety of national and local awards, including the AACP Crystal APPLE award for contributions to learning excellence in experiential education and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Francke Leadership Mentor Award. Along with co-editors Drs. Robert Beardsley and Gary Matzke, Boyle earlier this year published the second edition of "Leadership and Advocacy for Pharmacy" through APhA. Boyle has served three terms of office in the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management, as president of the Maryland Pharmacists Association and its foundation, national president of Phi Lambda Sigma leadership society and chair of the Pharmacy Academy in the National Academies of Practice. Boyle takes over interim dean duties from Dr. Dennis Killian, a faculty colleague who also is pharmacy director at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Killian served as interim dean during the spring 2014 semester. UMES' pharmacy program welcomed its first class in 2010 and offers year-round instruction so students can earn a Pharm.D. degree in three years instead of the more traditional four years.
