Noted author and activist to speak at Tuskegee as part of Lyceum Series

A nationally renowned author and activist for social justice will address the Tuskegee campus and community this week as part of the Tuskegee University Lyceum Series. Kevin Powell, acclaimed writer, political activist and author of 12 books will speak Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. CST in the Chappie James Center arena. The event is free and open to the public.

According to his website, Powell has dedicated his life to public service since he was an 18-year-old college student at Rutgers University, where he was deeply inspired by his campus' anti-apartheid movement and the first presidential run of Rev. Jesse Jackson. Since then he has organized in New York City's welfare hotels; co-founded a summer camp for urban youth; produced numerous town hall meetings, forums, summits, workshops, and conferences; done extensive voter education and voter registration work; advocated for environmental protection, immigrant rights, and an immediate end to the war in Iraq; participated in community protests against police brutality.

As an activist, he is the president and co-founder of BK Nation, a new national, progressive, multicultural organization focused on such issues as education, civic engagement, leadership training, health and wellness, social media, arts and culture, and job and small business creation. He was also a Democratic candidate for Congress in Brooklyn, NY in 2008 and 2010.

Powell is a native of Jersey City, NJ, and studied Political Science and History at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. He is currently a Phelps Stokes Fellow and a recent Writing Fellow with the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

He is a founding staff member at Vibe, the fastest growing magazine in American pop culture history, and he is a writer for numerous publications, including Esquire, The Amsterdam News, Newsweek, The Washington Post, Ebony, Rolling Stone, and Essence.

The Tuskegee University Lyceum Series is part of the Student Engagement Initiatives program, which is among the institution's priorities on Tuskegee University's vision document. The mission of the Lyceum Series is to engage students, faculty, staff, and the greater Tuskegee community. The high caliber features are aimed at enriching the overall education experience for audiences.
