Hampton University News October 12, 2018 Two Hampton University Students Selected as Summit Fellows by the United Negro College Fund, Inc. Hampton University Students, Kennedi Scott and Kristopher Small, have been selected as Summit Fellows by the United Negro College Fund, Inc., to participate in the 2018 HBCU Innovation Summit in Silicon Valley, CA, this month. "Hampton University students don't just achieve, they excel. This summit will set these extraordinary students apart, which will enable them to become more marketable when starting their careers. We are excited to see where these students go from here," said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. Kennedi Scott Kennedi Scott is a junior, computer engineering student from Chicago, IL. "I am so excited to be given this opportunity. I have been preparing for something like this since my freshman year of college. I have always worked hard in school and made sure my grades were good. I have worked in multiple research labs, including Microvascular Therapeutics & Imaging Lab at the University of California-Irvine and the Integrated Photonics Lab at Hampton University," said Scott. "Also, I was an engineer mentor in NASA's OPSPARC Challenge. As an HBCU Innovation Summit Fellow, I will be able to establish connections through networking during my time in Silicon Valley." Kristopher Small Kristopher Small is a sophomore, electrical engineering student from Jacksonville, FL. "I graduated with my Associate of Arts Degree from a local community college back home before I graduated high school. During that time, I participated in two internships in West Bethesda, Maryland working for the Department of Defense," said Small. "This summit experience will allow me to engage with real tech-professionals whom are making real significant strides to make the impossible, possible. Acquiring the knowledge will only propel me to align myself with them as we tackle science's biggest and complex problems together. With this summit experience, it wouldn't just be a nice thing to place on a resume, but a lifetime experience that changes perspectives about the tech-industry entirely." The 2018 HBCU Innovation Summit will be held October 10-14, 2018 in Silicon Valley, CA. UNCF covers all expenses over the course of four intensive days. Scott and Small will meet, connect, and engage directly with Silicon Valley's leading tech executives, engineers, and recruiters. Summit Fellows may have the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes on YouTube, Pure Storage, eBay, Visa, and Google. The final day culminates with a tech career fair, where over 22 companies will be available to meet with attendees. Some companies will even make on-the-spot job offers. SANDRA M.
