Xavier University Partners with California Community Colleges to Increase Baccalaureate-level Degree Attainment

Xavier University of Louisiana and the California Community Colleges system have entered into a partnership agreement which will make it easier for transfer-ready community college students from the California Community Colleges system to earn a baccalaureate-level degree from over 40 undergraduate academic programs offered by Xavier University of Louisiana.

According to the agreement, students who apply for the admission and successfully obtain a transfer-level associate degree with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher and complete either the California State University General Education Breadth pattern, or University of California Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum, will be guaranteed admission into Xavier with junior standing.

An alternate option to earn guaranteed admission will require transfer students to earn 30 or more UC (University of California) or CSU (California State University) transferrable units with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Some other advantages offered to transfer students according to the pact include priority consideration for housing, pre-admission advising, and consideration for transfer scholarships for students with a GPA of 3.2 or higher. However, for some specific majors, students may need to fulfill additional requirements.

"We are pleased to be able to offer California community college students this special opportunity to continue their education at Xavier, where they will have access to a unique academically enriching and personally rewarding experience," said Dr. Reynold Verret, President of Xavier University of Louisiana.

"We see this as a great opportunity for both California students, who may be unfamiliar with the benefits of attending a HBCU (Historically Black College and University) as their state has none, and for Xavier, as we seek to enroll meritorious students from all across our nation who wish to increase their knowledge and pursue their excellence here at Xavier," he added.

California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation, composed of 72 Districts and 114 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year, of which more than 100,000 students transfer each year to baccalaureate degree granting institutions. The goal of California's HBCU Transfer Guarantee Program, sponsored by a grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, is to provide additional transfer pathways that will ultimately contribute to an increase in baccalaureate-level degree attainment.
