Winston-Salem State University News March 31, 2014 WSSU Professor Earns Teaching Excellence Award Dr. Leslee H. Shepard, associate professor in the Division of Nursing at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), has been selected to receive a 2014 award for teaching excellence by the UNC Board of Governors. Nominated by special committees on their home campuses, the Board of Governors Committee on Personnel and Tenure selects an award recipient for each of the 17 campuses. Each winner receives a commemorative bronze medallion and a $12,500 cash prize. The award will be presented to Shepard at WSSU's commencement ceremony on May 16. Shepard teaches adult medical surgical nursing, nursing problems and introduction to professional nursing courses in the university's School of Health Sciences. She also serves as the director of the adult health area of the undergraduate programs and previously was the clinical coordinator for undergraduate nursing programs. Shepard has 20 years of nursing and nurse educator experience including her time as a clinical nurse specialist and educator at Forsyth Medical Center (FMC), where she was responsible for the education and orientation of the nursing staff. She also has served as a head nurse, team leader, care coordinator and staff nurse at FMC. In addition to teaching, Shepard received the Forsyth Medical Center's Best Research Project Award in 2010 and the Novant Health Nursing first place presentation award for her collaborative research project in 2013. She also worked collaboratively to develop and copyright the Hybrid Educational Extension Learning Partnership Nursing Model, which is a transformational approach to student learning and faculty development by way of resource sharing. The model develops partnerships between lower performing schools and higher performing schools to improve the passing rate for the national council licensure examination for nurses. Active in the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses and Sigma Theta Tau honor society of nursing, Shepard also serves as chair of WSSU's governance committee and retention council as well as the curriculum committee in the Division of Nursing. She received her undergraduate degree in nursing at WSSU, her master's degree in nursing education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and her doctorate in teaching leadership from Walden University.
