Hampton University News July 8, 2021 Hampton University Receives the 2021 PEMS Special Recognition Award for its work in providing a Community Vaccination Clinic and Mobile Vaccination Unit during the COVID-19 Pandemic Hampton University (HU) has been chosen by the Peninsulas Emergency Medical Services (PEMS) Council, Inc. EMS Awards Committee to receive the 2021 PEMS Special Recognition Award for its work in providing a Community Vaccination Clinic and Mobile Vaccination Unit during the COVID-19 Pandemic. "Thank you to the Peninsulas Emergency Medical Services Council for recognizing the tremendous impact made by both the Hampton University Community COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic and the Hampton University Mobile Vaccination Clinic on our local community," said Dr. William R. Harvey, Hampton University President. "Serving the community is central to Hampton University's overall mission. The Hampton University Community COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic and the Hampton University Mobile Vaccination Clinic have successfully vaccinated more than 1,200 citizens across the Hampton Roads region and taken us another step toward ending the pandemic. I am pleased that our faculty, staff, and students continue to make an impact in the lives of those we call our neighbors." The 2021 Regional EMS awards recognize the outstanding achievements and notable work of individuals, agencies, organizations, and facilities that provide emergency medical services in the PEMS region (Peninsula, Middle Peninsula, and Northern Neck). "Hampton University's service to local, regional, and statewide EMS system development has contributed to the health, safety, and well-being of literally of thousands of citizens and visitors, including many of the region's most vulnerable," said Executive Director of the PEMS Council, Inc. "On behalf of the President of the PEMS Council, Julia Glover, the entire Board of Directors, the staff of the Council, and the entire PEMS region, I congratulate you on your achievement and thank you for your contributions to the continued development and implementation of an efficient, effective regional emergency medical services delivery system." Recipients of this year's regional awards will have the chance to compete for the prestigious 2021 Governor's EMS Awards, which will be announced November 6, 2021, at the 41st Annual Virginia EMS Symposium in Norfolk, VA. Winners will be presented with a trophy and a certificate signed by the Governor. "I am thankful to President Dr. William R. Harvey for his vision for the COVID-19 clinic and mobile unit and entrusting us to execute the plans," said Dr. Michelle Penn-Marshall, Hampton University Vice President for Research, Associate Provost, Dean of the Graduate College. "I am truly grateful for my colleagues, who are pharmacists and nurses, who were willing to serve the community by using their credentials, talents, and time. I am also thankful to the Hampton University technology team, Hampton University Police Department, buildings and grounds staff, media team, the Director of the Convocation Center. I am thankful for the mobile unit's clinic community engagement coordinator who has a huge heart for all people. I also thank the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Riverside Health System for assisting us with training and helping to set up the clinics." On March 1, Hampton University unveiled its new mobile testing and vaccination unit that provides COVID-19 screenings and vaccinations to citizens in underserved areas of Hampton Roads. HU has been extremely active in the Hampton Roads Community. Hampton University has hosted several community COVID-19 vaccination and testing clinics through partnerships with the Hispanic Resource Center of Coastal Virginia, St. Marks Missionary Baptist Church, the Virginia Department of Health as well as Riverside Health Systems.
