University of Arkansas Pine Bluff April 22, 2016 UAPB professor, students among featured in permanent African American art collection On May 12th, from 5-7 p.m. the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas will hold a reception and book release for a catalog with scholarly essays related to its Permanent Collection of African American art. The reception will include a discussion of the research related to the Collection by Executive Director Dr. Lenore Shoults, Curator Courtney Taylor, and UAPB Art Department Chair and artist Danny Campbell. Curator Courtney Taylor will lead guided tour of the exhibition Here. African American Art from the Permanent Collection. The publication features full color plates and essays by Curlee Holton, Executive Director of the David Driskell Center and founder of the Experimental Printmaking Workshop, Dr. Lisa Farrington of CUNY, and ASC staff addressing the significance of prints in the Collection, female African American artists, interviews with AfriCOBRA members Nelson Stevens and Kevin Cole, and the role of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff artists held in the Collection. Hardcover and paperback editions will be available for sale at the event. The exhibition, Here., features work from the Harlem Renaissance, Black Arts Movement, and contemporary work by nationally renowned African American artists such as Samella Lewis, Palmer Hayden, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, and Benny Andrews and acclaimed faculty and students from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff such as John Miller Howard, Tarrence Corbin, Kevin Cole, and Danny Campbell. The exhibition focuses on these artists' experiences here in America, here in the South, here in Arkansas, and here in Pine Bluff. The exhibition will remain on display through October 15, 2016. The exhibition and publication are sponsored by Simmons Bank. Also on view is the annual Pine Bluff High School exhibition created in response to ASC's Collection of African American art and the hands-on exhibitions Mindbender Mansion and the STEAM Studio which are brought to ASC through the Arkansas Discovery Network, which is funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and through sponsorship of Junior League of Pine Bluff. The Arts & Science Center (ASC), located at 701 S. Main St. in Pine Bluff, is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 1-4 p.m., and closed on Sunday and Monday. Gallery admission is free.
