High School Counselors Take a Closer Look at ASU
By Tina Joly

High school counselors from Alabama and Georgia visited ASU to get the latest information on programs and opportunities available to their students.

Alabama State University's Office of Admissions and Recruitment sponsored a luncheon and tour for high school guidance counselors on Tuesday, June 26.

The counselors heard from representatives from Admissions, Housing, Financial Aid and University College, as well as from deans and other faculty members.

The event was held to build upon ASU's positive working relationship with guidance counselors.

Cherise Peters, associate provost and vice president for Enrollment Management, said counselors work with the best and brightest students on a daily basis and can help us when we are recruiting the best and brightest.

"I think it's important that we bring the high school guidance counselors to campus so that they can get a first-hand look at the exciting things happening at ASU and tell their students about us," Peters said. "Having a good relationship with them benefits the University and the students."

ASU alumna LaToka Gibbs ('93) is the director of Robert E. Lee High School's Guidance Office. Gibbs said ASU has done a great job networking with Montgomery-area schools.

"I came to the event to get the latest information on what is happening at Alabama State University to share with my students," Gibbs said. "It is important that ASU maintain a close relationship with Lee and other high schools so the students will see the connection, and we can do a good job networking to find the best fit for our students,"

Veta Lewis, who graduated from ASU in 1995, is a guidance counselor at Central High School in Phenix City. Her son and daughter also currently attend ASU. Lewis said she is excited about the new programs and developments at the University.

"We have a lot of students interested in ASU, and I came to this event to find out about new programs so that I can keep my students updated," she said.

The counselors capped off their visit with a bus tour to get a closer look at the many new and renovated facilities on ASU's campus.
