NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY ENTERS PARTNERSHIP WITH TECH GIANT NETFLIX

Norfolk‌ ‌State‌ ‌University‌, ‌Netflix‌ ‌and‌ ‌2U, ‌ ‌a‌ ‌global‌ leader‌ ‌in‌ ‌technology‌ ‌education, ‌are ‌entering a partnership to launch‌ ‌three‌ ‌online‌ ‌tech‌ ‌boot‌ ‌camps‌ ‌for‌ ‌current‌ ‌students‌ ‌and‌ ‌alumni‌ ‌from‌ ‌the‌ ‌class‌ ‌of‌ ‌2019‌ ‌and‌ ‌2020.‌ ‌Students‌ ‌who‌ ‌are‌ ‌accepted‌ ‌are‌ ‌eligible‌ ‌to‌ ‌receive‌ ‌a‌ ‌Netflix‌ ‌scholarship‌ ‌that‌ ‌will‌ ‌cover‌ ‌the‌ ‌cost‌ ‌of‌ ‌attendance‌.‌ ‌

The‌ ‌‌Netflix‌ ‌Virtual‌ ‌HBCU‌ ‌Boot‌ ‌Camp‌‌ ‌will‌ ‌allow‌ ‌130‌ Norfolk State ‌students‌ ‌and‌ ‌alumni‌ ‌to‌ ‌take‌ ‌part‌ ‌in‌ ‌an‌ ‌intensive‌ ‌16-week‌ ‌course‌ ‌covering‌ ‌in-demand‌ ‌technology‌ ‌skills‌ ‌ranging‌ ‌from‌ ‌Java‌ ‌Engineering,‌ ‌to‌ ‌UX/UI‌ ‌Design,‌ ‌and‌ ‌Data‌ ‌Science.‌ ‌These‌ ‌courses‌ ‌bring‌ ‌together‌ ‌2U’s‌ ‌digital‌ ‌education‌ ‌platform, ‌ ‌a‌ ‌custom-built‌ ‌curriculum‌ ‌designed‌ ‌with‌ ‌the‌ ‌Netflix‌ ‌product‌ ‌team and Norfolk State University faculty who will co-facilitate the boot camps.

“This program is exclusive to NSU for the spring 2021 semester,” said Dr. Patricia Mead, chair of the NSU Department of Engineering. “It gives students the chance to receive instruction based on a curriculum that has been developed in partnership with the leading streaming service in the world, and students get one-on-one mentoring from Netflix employees. Both graduate and undergraduate students can participate.”

According to Dr. Claude Turner, computer science department chair, Norfolk State and computer science alumnus Michael Chase, a Netflix senior software engineer, will serve as a mentor to the NSU students. Chase is also a former chair of the Computer Science Department’s External Advisory Board.

Students‌ ‌from‌ ‌Norfolk‌ ‌State‌ ‌University‌ ‌are‌ ‌already‌ ‌getting‌ ‌a‌ ‌best-in-class‌ ‌education.‌ ‌This‌ ‌partnership‌ ‌will‌ ‌tee‌ ‌up‌ ‌even‌ ‌more‌ ‌opportunities‌ ‌for‌ ‌students‌ ‌and‌ ‌alumni‌ ‌to‌ ‌build‌ ‌successful‌ ‌careers‌ ‌and‌ ‌valuable‌ ‌mentorship‌ ‌opportunities.‌ ‌“Mr. Chase’s vision is for graduates from his alma mater to be career-ready with cutting-edge knowledge and skills,” said Turner.

Additionally, computer science students can seamlessly receive credit from the training by using the courses as electives. The Data Science and Advanced Java courses will be offered as advanced topics electives, while the UX/UI design course will be offered as a computer science general elective course.

Mead added that there is a component for Liberal Arts students as well. “Every NSU student can participate, so I encourage everyone to check out the program and fill out an application.”
