Fisk University Student Organization Awarded Funding To Expand Computing Group for Students

The Fisk University Computer Science Club has been awarded $3,000 from the Student Seed Fund to help launch a new chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery for Women (ACM-W) on campus. Sponsored by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and Google.org with support from ACM-W, the Student Seed Fund supports the growth of Women in Computing (WiCs) groups at different stages of development and varied institutional sizes.

"We are honored to receive this award as we continue our efforts to develop an encouraging and active network for students in computing," said Dr. Sajid Hussain, associate professor of computer science at Fisk University. "We are eager to launch a new ACM-W chapter on campus and we look forward to producing talented, intelligent, and exceptional computing graduates."

As part of the mission for the new ACM-W chapter, the Fisk University Computer Science Club seeks to empower young women by connecting them to a network of professional mentors. Members will participate in weekly web development workshops, where students will engage in thoughtful dialogue and will have the opportunity to create their own personal web pages with a registered domain name.

"Student computing groups are an important component of the undergraduate experience and should not be overlooked or undervalued," said NCWIT CEO and Co-founder Lucy Sanders. "These student-led efforts serve as a foundation of encouragement and support for aspiring technical graduates and professionals."
