Benedict Student-Athletes Post Record-Setting Academic Performance

Benedict College student-athletes may not have had any sporting competitions in the fall, but they proved to be champions in the classroom. After the conclusion of the fall 2020 semester, Benedict student-athletes compiled a cumulative 3.18 grade point average for the semester and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.16.

The term and cumulative GPAs are the highest in more than five years.

Out of 283 total unique student-athletes, including cheerleaders, two-thirds (189 total, 66.8%), earned higher than a 3.0 GPA. More than 41% (189) earned a 3.5 GPA or higher. And 40 students (14%) earned a perfect 40 for the semester.

"We are very proud of the academic achievements of our student-athletes," said Willie Washingtonhttps://benedicttigers.com/staff.aspx?staff=19, Benedict's Director of Athletics. "With no competition this fall, and limited practices, our students were able to completely focus on their academics and the results are impressive. Now we want to challenge all our student-athletes to keep up their grades as we move back into competition."

The women's tennis team led the way in the fall with a team GPA of 3.85 in the fall. Three of the seven members had a perfect 4.0 GPA for the term and no one had a semester GPA less than 3.65. Women's cross country had a 3.81 GPA for the semester, with four of the eight team members recording a 4.0 for the term.

Women's indoor/outdoor track & field led the way with nine student-athletes earning a 4.0. Softball was next with five. Football, women's cross country and cheerleading had four each. Women's tennis had three, while women's volleyball, men's basketball, men's tennis and baseball all had two each. Men's volleyball and men's indoor/outdoor track & field and women's basketball all had one each.

The cumulative GPA of the 334 student-athletes (multi-sport athletes were counted in each sport they compete in), registered a career GPA of 3.16, up from 2.96 at the end of the spring 202 semester.

Women's cross country has the highest cumulative GPA with a 3.78, edging out women's tennis with a 3.76.
