Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, who performed the first successful open-heart operation in 1893. Williams was born on January 18, 1856 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania; the fifth of seven children born to Daniel and Sarah Williams.

In 1883, Daniel Hale Williams was one of only four African American doctors in the Chicago area, yet had gained so much respect within the medical community that six years later, he was appointed to the Illinois Board of Health.  Upon his retirement, Daniel Hale Williams had bestowed upon him numerous honors and awards. He received honorary degrees from Howard and Wilberforce Universities, was named a charter member of the American College of Surgeons and was a member of the Chicago Surgical Society. Williams died on August 4, 1931, having set standards and examples for surgeons, both Black and White, for years to come.

HBCU Library Alliance 4th Membership Meeting

I've had the pleasure of speaking with many of you over these last few days regarding registration for the October 23-26 Pre-Conference on Advocacy and 4th Membership Meeting. It is an important show of support to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that we attend and actively participate in the Conference on Advocacy.  It is an equally important show of support that we come together to discuss the future directions of the HBCU Library Alliance.

Registration Numbers

As of today, 54 members representing 48 institutions have registered for the Membership meeting.  Several of you have indicated that you will register in the weeks ahead. Follow this link http://hbculibraries.org/html/meeting-form.html for registration information. The $150.00 registration fee is due no later than October 15th.

Let's set a very high standard of participation and support for the 4th Membership Meeting of the HBCU Library Alliance.

I look forward to seeing you in Montgomery.

Respectfully,

Sandra
