SUNO LIBRARY RECEIVES $14-MILLION MAKEOVER

The Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) will host an Open House Thursday, Nov. 2 to celebrate and showcase its $14-million restoration project. Tours are scheduled throughout the day at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The SUNO Library was destroyed in 2005 as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Flood waters soaked thousands of books, periodicals and other research materials. For years after that, students had access to a small library that was housed in a FEMA trailer. Then it moved to a small area of a building that has since been demolished.

Today, the Library features modern sleek furniture, new artsy wall coverings and $7 million worth of new books. The restored Library, designed by Hertz Furniture of Ramsey, NJ, also has designated study areas, charging stations, a café, a computer lab and classroom space for graduate students.

"We're so proud to have designed and furnished these gorgeous and collaborative spaces for the students of SUNO" said Dan Goldfine, Hertz Furniture VP of Sales. "The flexible furniture is setting a new standard at SUNO and providing students with a beautiful 21st century environment which will help them achieve their goals. It's truly a new beginning at SUNO."

"We have spent a total of $25 million -- $11 million on the building and $14 million on the interior content, walls and lighting -- to create a state-of-art library for our students," said Library Director Shatiqua Mosby-Wilson. "I envision this space as one where SUNO students, faculty and staff, and other stakeholders can be proud to study, research and learn to relax."

SUNO Chancellor Lisa Mims-Devezin echoes those sentiments. "The library is the most important part of any university,'' Chancellor Mims-Devezin said." That's why it is so exciting to see our Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library fully restored. I want to congratulate Ms. Mosby-Wilson for a job well done."
