Harper '66 to direct corporate, foundation philanthropic efforts

James Harper, a 1966 Tuskegee University graduate, brings his vast experience in the corporate and public sectors to the new role of manager of corporate and foundation relations in the university's Office of Development.

In this capacity, Harper will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward corporations and foundations whose charitable giving goals and practices align with the university's. He will work with the leadership of the Office of Advancement and Development, academic deans, and other university administrators to develop and foster strong relationships with current and potential business and foundation donors.

"We look forward to Mr. Harper's leadership of our corporate and foundation giving programs to increase support for our students and faculty, grow Tuskegee University's endowment, and broadly support President McNair's vision of leadership and excellence," said Krystal Floyd, director of development.

Harper, who holds a business management degree from Tuskegee, is no stranger to the university, alumni or the surrounding community. A native of Tuskegee, he served city government in a variety of finance, economic development, business relations and strategic planning roles leading up to his appointment as city manager in 2014 - a position he held until his retirement in 2017.

Prior to his public service career, Harper honed his experience in sales, marketing and relationship-building through a number of blue-chip companies, such as Gerber Baby Products, Lenovo, the Foremost Insurance Agency, the Amway Corporation, Market America, and Dudley Products Company. In addition to his corporate work experience, he also provided consulting services to several private foundations and their fundraising efforts, including The Hunger Project and the Dudley Foundation.

An author of books on topics about African-American entrepreneurship, Harper also has provided book development and marketing services to authors and prospective authors, as well as small-to medium-sized businesses.
