Students Awarded Thurgood Marshall First Generation Scholarships
Four Alabama State University students were honored on Nov. 19 during a special scholarship ceremony recognizing outstanding students who are among the first in their families to attend college.
ASU President Gwendolyn E. Boyd presented the students with the Thurgood Marshall First Generation Scholarships on behalf of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the Coca-Cola Foundation.
Boyd congratulated recipients Mercy Besong, Samira Chatman, Chelsea Jackson and Sandrille Miller (who was unable to attend due to a class) for working hard to reach their goal of attending college.
"Opportunity is indeed here at ASU, and these students' stories are very compelling," Boyd said. "Like you (speaking to the scholarship winners), I was also the first in my family to attend college, and I am living the dream right now that any student at ASU may achieve."
Boyd also told the students that their futures hold endless possibilities.
"There is so much potential in all four of these students ... you are all game-changers, and with God on your side, you can do anything," Boyd said.
