NSU CELEBRATES PRIDE

Division of Student Affairs Celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Pride Month (LGBTQ Pride Month) is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots and efforts to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans. In support of our LGBTQ+ community at NSU, the Division of Student Affairs is committed to creating a safe space to cultivate opportunities which promote justice, equity, diversity, inclusive excellence, and a sense of belonging for all students within our campus community.

Although LGBT Pride Month is nationally recognized in June, we recognize Pride Month in April. Doing so allows us to celebrate and increase visibility for our LGBTQ+ students while classes are in session. This month and throughout the year, we supported our LGBTQ+ affinity group, Spectrum and sponsored its first-year LGBTQ+ Learning Community, hosted and collaborated on events such as the National Day of Silence, National Coming Out Day, supported events throughout LGBTQ+ History Month (October) and Pride Week, and implemented a formal Safe Space training program. During the Spring 2022 semester, we hosted the inaugural Lavender Graduation to honor lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students and acknowledge their achievements and contributions to the NSU community. This fall, the Office of Campus Life and Diversity will designate space in the Student Center for Spectrum, an NSU LGBTQ+ affinity group.

For more information on LGBT Pride Month or how you can help the Division of Student Affairs support our LGBTQ+ students, please contact Dr. Faith Fitzgerald, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, at fmfitzgerald@nsu.edumailto:fmfitzgerald@nsu.edu or Dyonna Wilson, Diversity Initiatives Coordinator, at dswilson@nsu.edumailto:dswilson@nsu.edu or contact the Office of Campus Life and Diversity at (757) 785-3866 or send an email to campuslife-diversity@nsu.edumailto:campuslife-diversity@nsu.edu.
