Campus Echo Reigns Supreme

The Campus Echo, the student-led newspaper at North Carolina Central University, continued its domination of the National HBCU Student News Media Conference Excellence in Journalism Contest awards, earning 16 awards this year. The six first-place and seven second-place awards set a conference record. The publication also received four awards from the North Carolina College Media Association.

"We're all ecstatic that some of our staffers and editors who have been around for years finally achieved the recognition they deserved - like Aaron Saunders for best headline writer and Chi Brown for best individual photograph," said Carlton Koonce, last year's editor-in-chief. "There's some world-class talent on the Campus Echo that some people never notice unless there is some sort of accolade to back it up. We're so proud of each other. Breaking our own awards record was a great and humbling experience for the Echo team. In this business, there's nothing like having your work recognized by other professionals." Last year the Campus Echo earned nine awards.

Led by faculty advisor Dr. Bruce dePyssler, the publication has won more than 150 national awards, including the Mark of Excellence award from the Society of Professional Journalists for best all-around online student newspaper. "Sixteen awards coming from news professionals at organizations like the Associated Press, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, plus four more from the N.C. College Media Association ... what can I say? I'm so proud of our students and happy to see that their hard work has been rewarded," said dePyssler.

Judges for this year's completion included: Jennifer Jenkins, New York Times.com; Jeanne Fox Alston, Newspaper Association of America Foundation; Linda Williams, The News & Observer (Raleigh); Candace Buckner, The Kansas City Star; Darlene Superville, The Associated Press; Deborah Heard, retired, The Washington Post; Delano Massey, Herald-Leader (Lexington, Ky.); Ben Kelly, Clarion-Ledger (Jackson, Miss.); Duchesne Drew, The Star-Tribune (Minneapolis); Regina Boone, Detroit Free Press; Linda Shockley, Dow Jones News Fund; Shelia Solomon, Chicago Tribune and Reginald Stewart, the McClatchy Company.

This year's editor-in-chief, Ashley Griffin, is thrilled that the hard work of the staff has paid off. "This was a team effort from top to bottom," she said.
