The Center for HBCU Media Advocacy, Inc. today announced former Morgan State University president Earl S. Richardson as its 2012 lifetime achievement HBCU Award recipient. Dr. Richardson will be presented with the award at the ceremony on April 20, 2012 at the Bowie State University Wiseman Student Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.
"We are honored that Dr. Richardson has accepted this prestigious award," said Jarrett L. Carter Sr., founder and executive director of the Center. "His tireless advocacy, vision and dedication to equity for historically black colleges and universities nationwide over his more than 30 years in higher education is matched by few. He is a treasure in the state of Maryland, and an icon within African-American history."
Prior to his retirement in 2010, Dr. Richardson served as president of Morgan State University for more than 26 years and left having doubled the university's enrollment, spearheading more than $500 million in capital improvements and guiding an academic expansion of more than 40 programs leading to the master's and doctorate degree.
Dr. Richardson headlines this year's recipients for the 'HBCU Trailblazer' awards, a class that includes:
Clinton R. Coleman - Livingstone College alumnus and current Director of Public Relations and Communications at Morgan State University. Former press secretary of Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke, and more than 30 years of PR service in city, state, federal and private sector.
Billie Gross - Bowie State University alumna and Public Affairs Specialist in the US Department of State. Primary organizer for agency's annual HBCU Policy Briefing, a direct recruitment and informational mechanism to place high achieving HBCU students in diplomatic and foreign affairs service.
Nicholas Perkins - Fayetteville State University alumnus, President and Founder of Perkins Management Services Inc. Perkins has built his enterprise into a multi-million dollar service-oriented company, with philanthropic focus on HBCUs. In 2011, Perkins pledged $1 million to Benedict College in South Carolina for the establishment of a hospitality management program.
Based in Baltimore, MD, the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy, Inc. seeks to promote the mission, culture and development of America's historically black colleges and universities through new media exposure, training and education. For more information, visit www.hbcumedia.org or www.hbcuawards.net.
