Washington Monthly Ranks Claflin #1 in the State

Claflin University leaped to the top ranking among institutions in South Carolina and Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the latest Washington Monthly's Best Liberal Arts Colleges rankings.

Claflin is ranked 22nd among 255 liberal arts colleges and universities. In 2012, it was the 38th ranked university. The magazine, which began ranking colleges and universities in 2005, rates schools based on their contribution to the public in three categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs) and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

Claflin University was ranked a top national liberal arts university in the U.S. News and World Report's 2012 "America's Best Colleges" report. The university has also been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for seven consecutive years, and is ranked first for its annual alumni giving rate among HBCUs by U.S. News and World Report. Forbes.com ranked Claflin University fifth among HBCUs in its 2011 "America's Best Colleges" listing.

The Washington Monthly is an independent publication based in Washington, D.C. For more information, visit http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/toc_2013.php.
