Jones Elected as MAEOPP President
Derrick Jones, executive director of Upward Bound at Mississippi Valley State University, was recently installed as the 19th president of the Mississippi Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MAEOPP) during the organization's annual spring conference. His term will last for two years.
"I am very enthusiastic with the opportunity to serve as the lead voice on behalf of the 34 Trio Programs in the state of Mississippi," said Jones. "MAEOPP will continue to advocate for the many low income and first generation students for equal educational opportunities and actively pursue stakeholders who share this same cause."
Jones received a bachelor's degree in general studies and master's degree in guidance counseling from Alcorn State University. He has served on the Southeastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel conference committee, held the positions of vice-president and treasurer for MAEOPP, and served one year as president for the Mississippi Counseling Association Delta Region.
MAEOPP's mission is to provide educational services and programs, professional education, cultural, and recreational opportunities to constituents from the service area and beyond. Quality services and programs are offered in a safe environment consistent with federal and state operational standards and guidelines.
Jones would like to thank his Valley colleagues for their ongoing and continued support of MAEOPP. "It is indeed a great day at the Valley for me to represent Trio Programs for the great state of Mississippi."
