Bowie State University Presents ‘Cancer Awareness Week'
The Natural Sciences Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at Bowie State University will host Cancer Awareness Week November 29-December 3 in an effort to promote information, tips and awareness as it relates to various forms of cancer. The theme for the week, Empower Yourself with Knowledge, emphasizes the importance of regular screenings and knowing what to look for and what to do to stay healthy.
Bowie State's Cancer Awareness Week is sponsored by a National Cancer Institute P-20 Grant received by the Department of Natural Sciences in 2005, which established a partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). The grant is intended to promote cancer education, research and collaborations between Bowie State faculty and researchers at the UMSOM. Dr. Davis is the principal investigator of the grant, while the two faculty members are Dr. Anisha Campbell, assistant professor in the Department of Natural Sciences and Dr. Annie Ruth Leslie, associate professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences. A Cancer Biology course has been established as a part of the educational focus of the grant and has been offered for the past two years at the University.
