Internationally-known philanthropy expert to speak at Tuskegee University

During a weekend of events marking Founder's Day, the Tuskegee University community will unite in celebration of its past and future. The alumni of the Classes of 1936, 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971 and 1976 will also be welcomed back to campus to reconnect and support their alma mater.

Culminating the April 8-10 activities, one of the world's most respected philanthropy thought leaders will address the university. Dr. Emmett D. Carson, the founding CEO of Silicon Valley Community Foundation, is the keynote speaker for the 99th Annual Founder's Day Convocation. The event will be held Sunday, April 10, at 9:30 a.m. CST in University Chapel.

In 2006, Carson led the unprecedented merger of two community foundations, creating the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. With a growth in assets from $1.4 billion to over $7.3 billion, the organization is the nation's largest community foundation. Its 2,000 family and corporate donor funds support a wide range of causes in California's Bay Area, across the nation and around the world.

Previously, Carson had a distinguished 12-year career as CEO of The Minneapolis Foundation and, prior to that, oversaw the Ford Foundation's U.S. and global grantmaking program on philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. Carson has published more than 100 works on philanthropy and is an authority on issues of social justice, public accountability and African American giving. He is consistently recognized as one of the most influential nonprofit leaders in the U.S. and has honorary degrees from Indiana University, Morehouse College and The National Hispanic University. Carson received both his master's and Ph.D. degrees in public and international affairs from Princeton University and his bachelor's degree in economics, Phi Beta Kappa, from Morehouse College.
