Cheyney University News April 9, 2014 W.W. Smith Charitable Trust Staff Visits Cheyney Campus Several Cheyney University W.W. Smith tuition-assistance scholarship recipients welcomed Michelle Montgomery, Grant Administrator, and Paralee Knight, Sr. Client Associate for Philanthropic Services of the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust on April 9. Earlier in the day, they had taken a tour of the Aquaponics facility and the new Science Center campus with Director of Development Andre′ Dixon, before joining the students at Carnegie Hall. “This scholarship means so much to me,” said sophomore Anwar-Nasser Mathis. The 20-year-old accounting major is the second person in his family to go to college and it helps him pay the bills. “I lost my parents back-to-back in 2010 and 2011 to cancer,” he explained. “This helps me enormously to get through school.” Montgomery visits many universities as part of her responsibilities as a grant administrator. She noted, “The best part of meeting with the students is learning what their goals and aspirations are and knowing that the scholarships help.” Other student awardees included Amir Abner, Nichel Bryant, Nyshia Saunders, Chad Kendall, Jeremy Evans, Nasser Mathis, Fatima Jackson, Lavonnia Swain, Nichel Bryant, Allen Showell, Aisha Harris, Jay Tucker, Asia Matthews, Aaron Yancey and Obafemi Ajayi. Cheyney University has received $1.6 million in scholarships from the Trust over the past 36 years. Mr. Dixon noted, “Support from The W.W. Smith Charitable trust has enabled hundreds of students to secure financial assistance and graduate from the University. Without the support of the Trust, a college education would be impossible.” The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust is one of the largest private supporters of the University. The private foundation established by philanthropist William Wikoff Smith has made funds available for student financial aid for more than 60 years. The Trust encourages the renewal of the scholarship aid for more than one year. Many students receive a grant for multiple years beginning their freshman year. SANDRA M.
