NCCU Student Receives Award From Honda

Damian "D.J." Medearis, a senior business and marketing student from Greensboro, N.C., received the Ernest C. Jones Sportsperson Award at the 2017 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge.

The award was presented during the annual tournament in Torrance, Calif., April 8-11, 2017. Medearis was selected for the honor by fellow players based on his dedication to mentoring students in the program and also his team spirit, camaraderie, good sportsmanship and academic focus. His selection earns NCCU an $1,000 prize.

Medearis joins two former NCCU players in being named for the honor: Susan Creary,'10 and Tony Fraizer, '98.

Mederais and his teammates made it to the "Sweet Sixteen" playoff round of the 2017 national tournament, in which they competed against 48 historically black colleges and universities.

The All-Star Challenge is open to all four-year, degree-granting HBCUs in the continental U.S. More than 50,000 students have participated in the annual competition, in which schools vie to qualify for the National Championship Tournament. NCCU teams have qualified for 27 of the 28 previous tournaments, bringing home a total of $241,500 in competition winnings.
