Local Couple Begins Scholarship Fund at Claflin University in Memory of Late Son
Robert R. and Annie Janet Jackson have established an endowed scholarship fund at Claflin University in memory of their late son, Casey R. Jackson, '08.
The Casey Robert Jackson Memorial Endowed Scholarship will annually award scholarships to freshmen who graduated from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High school that enroll at Claflin University.
"Casey was an exceptional student. This is a great memorial to an outstanding person and student," said President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale.
Tisdale met with the Jackson family on May 30, which would have been Casey's birthday. As a student, Jackson was a power forward on the Panthers basketball team and a member of the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College. Jackson was also a member of 315th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
He passed away after a valiant fight against leukemia on May 15, 2011.
Panthers Head Basketball Coach Ron Woodard fondly remembered Jackson as "a true scholar athlete." Woodard said Jackson never had NBA dreams like many college basketball players. Instead, Woodard recalled all Jackson wanted to do was own a business and give back to the community.
"He loved Claflin and O-W," Woodard said. "He was what I call my 'look out guy' because he was also so dependable. He was a first-class guy," Woodard said.
Memorials may be made in Jackson's memory to the Casey Robert Jackson Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund at Claflin University.
