Bowie State President Elected Chair of AASCU Board of Directors

(Bowie, Md.)-Bowie State University President Mickey L. Burnim was recently elected to serve on the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Board of Directors as chair-elect for the current year. For the next several months, President Burnim will serve in this capacity as he prepares to take over the position of chair of the board beginning in October 2011.

"The AASCU provides a number of opportunities to research and advocate for public higher education institutions like Bowie State University," said President Burnim. "It is an honor to serve in this capacity and I look forward to working with the Board of Directors to fulfill the mission of the organization."

Nominations are submitted by a nominating committee and elected to serve on the Board of Directors by the members of the association at an annual meeting. As part of the Executive Committee, Dr. Burnim will be involved in making recommendations to the full Board of Directors on any matter of business for the AASCU.

"Mickey Burnim has been a very active, engaged participant in AASCU for the past 15 years and has provided strong leadership for several key programs and activities," noted AASCU President Muriel A. Howard. "We are very fortunate that he has now accepted this new leadership role in our association."

In addition, the Board of Directors recommends policies, establishes and discharges committees, employs the president and prescribes the president's duties, authorizes and approves employment, determines meetings and acts on behalf of the association in matters of business. Key initiatives for the coming year include approval of the AASCU's annual public policy agenda, the AASCU Strategic Plan and the celebration of the association's 50th anniversary to educate the public about the role of public higher education.

Dr. Burnim has served as the ninth president of Bowie State University since September 2006.

The association was founded in 1961 with the purpose of promoting appreciated and support for public higher education, advocating for member institutions, providing policy leadership and program support and to create professional development opportunities for institutional leaders. 420 public colleges and universities compose the membership of the AASCU throughout the United States and its territories, ranging in size from 1,000 to 44,000 students.
