Greetings Colleagues,

We hope you're doing well and staying healthy. As a valued member of the HBCU Library Alliance, I would like to let you know about the critical activities and initiatives your Board of Directors has diligently worked on since our last interaction. Here are a few updates from our August 17, 2023 meeting that we are excited to share:

NEH Chair's Award: Loretta Parham shared significant messaging with us. A productive meeting occurred between Molly Hardy, the senior program officer for NEH, Loretta and me. Discussions centered around the HBCU Library Alliance's role in exploring paths toward sustainability, especially for smaller institutions. More information is forthcoming.

New Development Officer: There is exciting news to share on the personnel front. We've welcomed Marion Key as the Development Officer for the HBCU Library Alliance! With her background as a Bethune Cookman University (FL) graduate (Master of Science, Organizational Leadership) and experience at the Fund for Advancement of Minorities Through Education (FAME), Marion is poised to contribute immensely to our growth and sustainability.

Leadership Grant: Program Manager Shaneé Willis provided insights into a grant set to make a transformative impact. Collaborating with Board Chair Adrienne Webber and Board Treasurer Tina Rollins, a draft concept for the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Leadership grant program has been crafted. This grant can potentially award scholarships to paraprofessionals pursuing an MLIS degree at North Carolina Central University. IMLS Program Officer Sarah Fuller is reviewing the draft proposal. The grant's focus on professional development with a leadership component aligns with our mission.

Quarterly Board Meetings: Adrienne Webber provided information on an important upcoming event. This fall, she is proposing a face-to-face retreat for the Board in Charleston, South Carolina. This retreat will be a platform to delve into the operational intricacies of the Alliance, clarify Board members' roles, and prioritize the needs of our membership. Updates from this retreat will be shared with members.

Board Communication: Board Secretary Kimberely Bugg brought forward a valuable communication strategy tool. This recommendation can inspire us and optimize our engagement with the membership.

These updates only scratch the surface of the many meaningful discussions and actions in which your Board of Directors has been immersed. We are fully committed to serving the best interests of HBCU Library Alliance members. I want you to know that your input and engagement continue to be invaluable as we navigate these endeavors.

If you have any thoughts, questions, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you shortly.

Respectfully,

Sandra
