Claflin University to Host Photographer Cecil Williams Exhibit in February

The Arthur Rose Museum at Claflin University will host an exhibit this month highlight the work of renowned local photographer Cecil Williams, ’60.

“Cecil Williams is truly a living legend who captured some of the most iconic images of the Civil Rights Era,” said Alvin Staley, chair of the Department of Art. “We invite the community to view his historic photography and enjoy this fantastic collection.”

The exhibit, which will run from Feb. 3 to March 1, is free and open to the public. A reception honoring Williams will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. in the Museum.

The Williams exhibit will feature his depictions of Thurgood Marshall and President Barack Obama, among others.

Williams is the author of several books outlining the struggle for equal rights including Out-of-the-Box in Dixie and Freedom and Justice: Four Decades of the Civil Rights Struggle As Seen by a Black Photographer in the Deep South. His photographs have been published in 126 books, 17 newspapers and featured in 11 television documentaries. For his work, he has been recognized by such organizations at the South Carolina Arts Commission, the National Conference of Black Mayors and the NAACP. He also received a Presidential Citation from Claflin President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale.

He is a member of the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame for his “exceptional achievements in the field of Arts and Entertainment.” He is in constant demand as a speaker and presenter and has lectured through the United States on his experiences as a civil rights movement photographer.
