Hampton University awarded $1.4 million Student Support Services Grant

Hampton University's Student Support Services Program has been awarded a $1,461,700 continuation grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. Through this grant HU will continue to provide low-income and first-generation college students with opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.

The HU grant funding period is Sept. 1, 2016 - Aug. 31, 2021. Student Support Services is one of seven Federal TRIO Programs funded through the U.S. Department of Education.

"HU's Student Support Services participants performed extremely well academically for the 2014-15 academic school year," said Mikael Davis, Director of Student Support Services. "This program has been an integral part of the HU community for over 40 years, so we are very excited to continue to work with such a deserving population of students."

Awarded through a competitive process, the federal grant enables HU to continue to provide free tutoring, academic coaching and tracking, assistance with course selection, information about financial aid and economic literacy, mid-term deficiency counseling, near-peer advising, access to annual graduate and professional schools tours, and grant aid.

During the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters, over 50 percent of the HU Student Support Services participants made the Dean's List; over 90 percent made satisfactory progress towards graduation, and 94 percent of program participants are in Good Academic Standing. In addition, 86 percent of the students served either graduated or re-enrolled in the university this past year.
