Winston-Salem State University March 22, 2017 WSSU professor wins UNC System award for teaching Donna Gwyn Wiggins, associate professor in the Department of Music at Winston-Salem State University, has been named a recipient of the 2017 Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. She will receive a $12,500 stipend and be presented with a commemorative bronze medallion during the university's spring commencement ceremony. The award was established in 1994 by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors to identify and reward good teaching. One faculty member from each of its 17 campuses is selected each year. "I am extremely humbled to have been named a recipient of this prestigious award," Wiggins said. "I am grateful for the opportunity to engage with students both in and out of the classroom. This award is a reminder that the important work we do on the 17 constituent campuses of the UNC system does not go unnoticed. " Wiggins teaches courses to pre-professional elementary, as well as music, educators, and supervises pre-clinical and clinical student experiences. She also contributes to the General Education curriculum, instructing students in Afro-American Music and Liberal Learning seminars. Throughout her 16 years at WSSU, Wiggins' impact as a professor and grant-funded researcher has extended beyond the campus in many ways. She is actively involved in music-related community projects for both youth and seniors; published in peer-reviewed journals and books; and a presenter on music education topics at state, division, and national conferences. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the North Carolina Music Educators Association, the Winston-Salem Piano Teachers Association, and several other industry-related professional organizations.
