James B. Duke Memorial library receives
LSTA Project Access & Digitization grant

The James B. Duke Memorial Library at Johnson C. Smith University received $94,417 from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) to digitize the James Gibson Peeler collection. The LSTA Project Access & Digitization grant will allow the library to digitize and create an online exhibit of Peeler's photographs. This project will provide a visual documentation of Charlotte's African-American heritage and culture.
Peeler's work as a photographer in Charlotte spanned almost half a century from 1959-2003. His candid snapshots of Charlotte's citizens were known throughout the city; his subjects came from all types of social and economic background. Some of his images include several street scenes of downtown Charlotte, as well as many of the city's African American neighborhoods.  Peeler's photographs are moments frozen in time that tells the story of the city of Charlotte.  There is simply no better preserved or more extensive collection in the city's history that documents urban African American life in Charlotte than that of Peeler's photographs.  Peeler's photographs have been used in several publications and exhibits. His photographs are sporadic through the Charlotte community. The Peeler family has entrusted this entire photograph collection to Johnson C. Smith University.
The HBCU Library Alliance LYRASIS Photographic Preservation grant provided the initial funding to process the collection and to hire a Photo Archivist to organize the photographs. This LSTA grant will allow JCSU to provide access to this collective body of work for research on African Americans.
Monika Rhue, Director of Library Services will serve as Project Manager for the project. Brandon Lunsford, Archival Services Librarian will serve as Co- Project Manager.
This grant was made possible by funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.

Good morning:  This is really excellent news, congratulations to Monika Rhue and the entire team of the JCSU Duke Memorial Library.  I would add that the HBCU Library Alliance LYRASIS Photographic Preservation grant was funded by the Mellon Foundation, so much appreciation to them as well.  Grantmakers love it when their grant dollars seed other projects.
Again, congratulations Monika!
