Colleagues,

It is my distinct pleasure to announce this exciting news regarding the naming of the "Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright" in honor of former University of Kansas provost and executive vice chancellor, Dr. David Shulenburger.

The naming recognizes a recent major gift from David and his important role in laying the foundation for the university's adoption of an open access policy. This gift, the first of its kind in the United States, will support programming and operations for expanding open access or public access for scholarly communications at KU.

Under the leadership of Ada Emmett, head of the Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright, and Assistant Dean Erin Ellis, the unit will be able to more effectively encourage, support and reward faculty and graduate students for their efforts to actively shift the scholarly communication system toward an open, equitable and fair system.

A consortium of donors-including many members of our Libraries' Board of our Advocates-have contributed to the fund in David's honor.

The public announcement is available online at https://lib.ku.edu/news/2014/shulenburger.

Thanks to the new Shulenburger fund, we were able to launch the first annual Shulenburger Award for Innovation & Advocacy in Scholarly Communications. The award recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to innovation and advocacy for the advancement of scholarly communication and open access.
Prof. Marc Greenberg and Advocate member, Prof. Town Peterson were our first awardees, both strong advocates in advancing OA at KU and beyond.

Warm regards,

lorraine
