Clark Atlanta University News March 17, 2015 Rev. Jesse Jackson To Lead Clark Atlanta University's Rememberance of Bloody Sunday March 20 The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, legendary civil rights leader and Rainbow PUSH Coalition founder and president, will lead Clark Atlanta University's remembrance of "Bloody Sunday" and deliver a message on the occasion Friday, March 20, at 10:45 a.m. in the Bishop Henderson Student Center, 223 James P. Brawley Drive, S.W. Atlanta 30314. Clark Atlanta University (CAU) President Carlton E. Brown says, "Rev. Jackson has dedicated his life's work to be at the vanguard for movements of social change, justice and equality. He has earned the ear of U.S. presidents and international leaders as a conduit to give a voice to the voiceless, and we are grateful to have his presence on our campus, sharing firsthand with our students his unique, historical perspective." Longtime advocate and lieutenant to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jackson has played a pivotal role in virtually every movement for empowerment, peace, civil rights, gender equality, and economic and social justice for the past 40 years. On August 9, 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded Jackson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. In October 1997, Jackson was appointed by President Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as special envoy for the Promotion of Democracy in Africa. In 1991, he was elected Senator of Washington, D.C., advocating for statehood for the nation's capital and advancing the "rainbow" agenda at the national and international levels. Since then, he has continued to promote voter registration and lead get-out-the-vote campaigns, spearheading major organizing tours through Appalachia, Mississippi, California and Georgia. He continues to be a leading advocate for a variety of public policy issues and has acted many times as an international diplomat in sensitive situations.
