DRAKE STATE STUDENT TAKES GOLD IN NATIONAL SKILLSUSA COMPETITION AND GOES ON TO PRE-WORLD EVENT

J.F. Drake State Community & Technical College would like to congratulate welding student, Jonathan Smith, who had already placed 1st in the State of Alabama SkillsUSA Competition, but has now gone on to represent the State to win 6st Place in the National SkillsUSA.  This competition was held last month at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY.  Drake State is very proud of Jonathan for this well-deserved accomplishment!

"We placed sixth out of 50" stated a proud Ryan Green, Welding Instructor at Drake State, "and the top 8 qualify for the Pre-World Welding Competition!" So now Smith has a secured spot at the global level.  Green went on to state that "there will be three rounds and three will be eliminated, after the last round, then it's winner take all."  The winner will represent the United States in 2017. The first two rounds will be held at the Robotics Technology Park in Decatur, AL. "So it's right in our back yard," exclaimed Green.

In April, Smith and fellow Drake State welding student, Kory Raferty, represented Drake State as they placed 1st and 2nd in Welding amongst 26 contestants from all post-secondary schools in Alabama. According to Green, it was the second time Drake State had swept the welding completion statewide.
