ASU Dean Receives Two Prestigious Honors
Educator and actress Dr. Tommie "Tonea" Stewart, dean of ASU's College of Visual and Performing Arts, recently accepted two prestigious awards.
Stewart was conferred a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from Talladega College during the school's recent commencement ceremony, and she was named a Lifetime Achiever by the Oliver Robinson Foundation in Birmingham.
Stewart said she is humbled and excited to be recognized for her work.
"Receiving these honors is a wonderful blessing," Stewart said. "It allows me to smell my flowers and feel truly appreciated."
The two honors recognize Stewart's long record of achievement in the humanities and her significant contributions to society.
Talladega College President Billy C. Hawkins said the honorary degree recognizes Stewart's accomplishments as an actress and supporter of students in the performing arts.

"Your professional and academic achievements are commendable, and Talladega College takes great pleasure in awarding you its honorary degree," Hawkins said.
The Oliver Robinson Foundation presented Stewart the Lifetime Achiever award during its black-tie Alabama Black Achievers Awards Gala.
"The event spotlights African-Americans who give unselfishly of their time and/or resources to make a difference in their respective communities," Foundation officials said.
