SU hosting workshop on building Computational Science workforce
The Department of Computer Science is hosting a "Research and Education in Computational Science" workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, April 2 in the room 120 of T.T. Allain Hall.
The workshop will focus on the increasing workforce needs of persons well versed in computation science.
Computational science has become another means of advancing knowledge along with traditional methods of theory and experimentation. Several National Science Foundation panels, the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee and the scientific societies have noted the need for professionals who are well-versed in computational science in order to maintain the competitiveness for the U.S. in academic and non-academic research and development.
In recognition of those needs, the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, has as one of its goals assisting colleges and universities to create and expand computational science programs.
XSEDE is co-sponsoring the workshop at Southern to discuss these issues and to begin to formulate undergraduate and graduate programs in computational science that can meet these needs.
Dr. Steven Gordon, lead for the XSEDE education program, will provide an overview of model programs and help to facilitate discussions along with  Dr. Ebrahim Khosravi, chair and professor in the Department of Computer Science..
