HU provost appointed board chair of the National Institute of Aerospace

Hampton University Provost Dr. Pamela V. Hammond was recently appointed chair of the board of directors of the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA). Headquartered in the city of Hampton, NIA is a non-profit research and graduate education institute created to conduct cutting-edge research in the areas of aerospace and atmospheric science.

“When evaluating everything NIA does to assist in preparing students I am honored to be named chair of the board of directors,” Hammond remarked. “I am humbled to be able to help the next generation of aerospace researchers. I expect NIA to reach new heights in aerospace research as it enters its second decade of operations.”

Hammond has served for the past two years as vice-chair for the board of directors of NIA, and has been a member since 2009. As chair of the board of directors her primary role is one of fiduciary responsibility i.e. insuring that the organization is operating as a business and remains as transparent as possible.

Hammond served as the dean of the School of Nursing at Hampton University before her appointment as provost. Through her efforts, Hampton University implemented the first Ph.D. program in nursing at a historically black college or university in 1999, resulting in an increase in the numbers of doctorally prepared racial and ethnic minority nurses.

Hammond has held a variety of leadership positions of increasing responsibility and dedicated herself to promoting the education and well-being of students and the health and welfare of underserved, abused, and neglected individuals. Her most notable appointments have been to the Advisory Council for the Center for Scientific Review Committee of the National Institutes of Health, National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Library of Medicine Environmental Health Information Partnership, Virginia Board of Nursing, and the Advisory Council on the Future of Nursing in Virginia. Currently, Dr. Hammond serves on the following boards and entities: Virginia Space Grant Consortium Board of Directors, the New American Colleges and Universities Consortium, the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, Inc., Tinina Q. Cade Foundation Board of Trustees, the Advisory Board for the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Project Success, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation reviewer and is an active member of numerous professional organizations. She has multiple publications on a variety of topics, including research, health disparities, doctoral education, recruitment and retention of minority students, and child abuse and neglect.

Hammond received a B.S. degree in nursing from Tuskegee University, a M.S. degree in maternal child nursing from the University of Maryland-Baltimore, and the Ph.D. in educational leadership from Old Dominion University.

NIA is a consortium of top research institutions including Hampton University, Georgia Tech, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina State, University of Maryland, Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University and the AIAA Foundation. The purpose of NIA is to foster research collaboration, provide comprehensive graduate and continuing education in science and engineering, stimulate the commercialization of new intellectual property through research activities, and to promote and provide aerospace science and engineering outreach to the region and nation. The Institute serves as a strategic partner with NASA’s Langley Research Center and the aerospace community to enable research creativity and expand technology development opportunities.
