Fisk University News August 2017 FISK UNIVERSITY ENGLISH MAJORS SELECTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAMS Five Fisk University English majors were selected to participate in summer internship and research programs during summer 2017. Michelle Jones, a 2017 graduate of Fisk, attended the SSRC-Mellon Mays Annual Graduate Student Summer Conference at the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque. While at Fisk, she was a UNCF-Mellon Mays Fellow. Jones will begin her graduate studies in English at Eastern Illinois University in fall 2017. Samanda Robinson, also a 2017 graduate of Fisk and a UNCF Mellon-May Fellow, attended the SSRC-Mellon Mays Annual Graduate Student Summer Conference at the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque. While at the SSRC-Mellon Mays Annual Conference, she presented her project, "Sequential Art and Social Justice Movements: Slave Narrative Time Travel in Octavia Butler's Kindred," on a panel composed of graduate students from around the country. Robinson will begin her doctoral studies in English and Women's and Gender Studies at Johns Hopkins University in fall 2017. Iyanna Hamby was selected by the Big Ten Academic Alliance and The Leadership Alliance for summer research experiences at Northwestern University and Columbia University, respectively. She opted to attend Northwestern University in order to work with Dr. Harvey Young whose research specialty is African American theater. Hamby is a Mellon Mays Fellow, a member of the W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society, and Mortar Board, Inc. Elijah Porter was selected by The Leadership Alliance for a summer research experience at New York University. While at NYU, Porter worked Dr. Anna McCarthy in the Department of Cinema Studies. Porter is a member is of the W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society. Anna Flood participated in the UNCF/Mellon Mays Summer Research Institute at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. As a UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, Flood is part of a cohort of undergraduate students from around the country who work with mentors at their home institutions to develop original research projects, with the ultimate goal of pursuing graduate studies. She is currently working with Dr. Katharine Burnett, Assistant Professor of English at Fisk, on her project, "Slavery's Eerie Presence: Analyzing the Role of the Gothic in African-American Literature."
