Hampton University News September 6, 2016 Hampton University Welcomes Alumnus Paul C. Harris 'Home' as Senior Vice President Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey and the entire HU community welcomes alumnus Paul C. Harris back to his 'Home by the Sea' as a Senior Vice President on September 6, 2016. Harris has served the prestigious institution of higher education as a member of Hampton University's Board of Trustees and will now transition from the board to this key administrative post. "Attorney Paul Harris is one of many high caliber Hamptonian leaders nurtured in classrooms right here on our historic campus," said Harvey. "His successful professional career is testament to THE Standard of Excellence that is Hampton University and we look forward to his joining our top administrators committed to fulfilling our Founder, Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong's expressed directive to have everything at this stellar institution excel." A native of Charlottesville, Virginia, Harris has most recently dedicated his professional career to the service of others from the ranks of the military to making history as the first black Republican elected to the Virginia General Assembly since 1891. He was an active and respected leader on campus during his time as a student at Hampton. Harris was both student body president and cadet commander of Hampton's Army ROTC battalion during his senior year. After graduating from Hampton in 1986 Harris served four years on active duty in the United States Army as a military intelligence officer before enrolling at George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. Harris earned his law degree from George Washington in 1995 and began his legal career. Two years later, he launched a fast-rising political career by winning a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, in 1997, representing the 58th District-the historic seat once held by Thomas Jefferson. Harris resigned his seat in the House of Delegates in 2001 to accept former President George W. Bush's appointment with the United States Department of Justice where he became deputy associate attorney general. Harris resigned from the Justice Department in 2003 to join the private sector as senior counsel for Raytheon Company and has held positions of increasing authority at several global companies, including Ernst & Young, Northrop Grumman and most recently Sodexo, Inc. "I am excited to return to my alma mater where the possibilities are limitless. The Hampton experience was transformative for me. It has always been an extraordinary and unique institution of learning and innovation with a strong focus on values, service, and character. I feel exuberant just being on the campus among some of the brightest minds and most engaging students in the country," Harris said. Harris has high praise for Hampton's president. "Over the past 39 years, Dr. Harvey's vision and leadership have built Hampton into one of the most forward-leaning universities of its size in the country. Hampton has three NASA satellites currently in orbit and those missions are controlled by Hampton. There are very few universities who can make that claim," Harris said. "Hampton also is home to one of the most advanced proton therapy cancer treatment centers in the world. Under Dr. Harvey's leadership, Hampton has earned high marks as an institution that is fiercely committed to delivering for its students and their parents and the many other stakeholders associated with the university." Harris said, "Hampton's remarkable achievements under Dr. Harvey's leadership have been a tremendous source of pride for Hampton's alumni. The opportunities that lie ahead for Hampton University are enormous, and the ability to help lead this next chapter is deeply humbling and incredibly exhilarating." SANDRA M.
