Bennett College Remembers Sandy Hook Elementary with Balloon Launch Ceremony

It was a sight to see as balloons drifted to the heavens, offering tribute to those who lost their lives in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Bennett College's Alpha Delta Epsilon Cast of Alpha Psi Omega National Honor Society hosted this remembrance ceremony on the quadrangle of the campus, exactly two months following the tragedy.

"We want the Sandy Hook community to know that we share their pain and that we are praying for their continued strength. ...The Bennett College family and other members of the Greensboro/Triad community have them constantly in our prayers, and we wish for them the very best," said Dr. Millicent Rainey, provost.

President of the organization, Raquel Bryant '13 shared that the event at Sandy Hook is one that has weighed heavy on the hearts of the student body.

"The Bennett family wants to send out our love to the students, the parents and families who are still mourning a great loss," Bryant said.

According to Bryant, the launched balloons included two butterflies, inscribed with a contact phone number. The honor society hopes that the people who find the butterflies will call and let the College know just how far the balloons traveled.

Along with the launch, the ceremony also featured a performance from the children of the Martin Dixon Intergenerational Center. The preschoolers sang "The Wheels on the Bus," to showcase the precious innocence of children.

On December 14, 2012, a 20-year-old gunman fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the village of Sandy Hook in Newton, Connecticut. This incident remains the second deadliest school shooting in United States history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.
