Voorhees College April 24, 2014 Voorhees' SGA president makes history Voorhees College recently installed its first female Student Government Association president in 13 years making her the fourth female SGA president in the history of the institution. Autumn Woods, a 21-year-old native of Atlanta, Ga., said she was influenced to run for SGA president because there are not many young women on campus holding leadership positions. "I would like to be a role model for young women so that they too will one day hold positions of leadership and recognize their ability to be great," Woods said. Woods is a rising senior majoring in biology. Her extracurricular activities include the Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Culture Club and Student Government Association. She also enjoys reading, tutoring and singing. Woods said she feels honored to hold the title of Student Government Association president. "I'm excited to be in a position where I can influence and inspire students on campus," she said. "I feel that my peers at Voorhees need student leaders who have compassion for their needs and also cares about their progression at this institution." As the SGA president, she would like to implement a campus-wide community service initiative and a campus-safety initiative. She hopes to also work with the youth in the Denmark community. "My biggest priority as Student Government Association president will be to implement new initiatives on campus that will be beneficial for not only the student body but also faculty, staff and administrators." President Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr. said that Woods will be a great student leader who will motivate our students to continue matriculating at Voorhees until they graduate. "Just as Voorhees' founder, Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Menafee gave so much of herself for her fellow man, I believe that Autumn will do the same for our student body," Sellers said. "Autumn exhibits the values of persistence, determination and resilience, and these are the qualities needed in our student leaders." Woods is on the president's list and has achieved departmental academic honors in biology. Additionally, she is a member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. Additional Student Government Association officers installed were Carlos Washington, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice from Columbia, S.C., as vice president, and Nicole Richardson, a junior majoring in mass communications from Los Angeles, as business manager. Tamyra Berry, a junior majoring in business administration, was also installed as Miss Voorhees College 2014-2015. Berry, a native a Hartsville, S.C., plans to work with newly elected SGA officers to implement programs on campus to prevent domestic violence and increase emergency preparedness and student pride. "As Miss Voorhees College 2014-2015, I feel obligated to assist the student body with becoming more informed on national issues that affect us," Berry said. "Having this position will give me a platform to better help Voorhees students and the institution as a whole." Berry is member of Delta Mu Delta Honor Society, Honors College, the Voorhees College Cheerleading Squad, Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Culture Club and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She is also on the president's list. The coronation of Miss Voorhees College 2014-2015 will be held on September 26.
